SCENE MOB:
Battle Axe had a pretty amazing in 2001, both on the popular and underground front. Swollen Members were doing really well in Canada with the release of Bad Dreams, and also the label was releasing all these underground albums and many of them were pretty good (Abstract Rude's P.A.I.N.T., Moka Only's Lime Green and the Codename Scorpion album). Things were looking good for the label and Buc Fifty was the next in line to release an album.
Buc Fifty was not a newcomer to the rap game, he was previously known as Bucwheed and a member of The Wascals (although their album was scrapped then, it's now available), and had guest appearance with Eazy-E and The Pharcyde back in 1992. Although the name switch to Buc Fifty came with a style switch, gone was the high pitch juvenile style of The Wascals and in was a slower, more confident and deeper voice. The subject matter also turned more around crime too, as the LA lifestyle probably got to him. Buc Fifty wasn't totally new for the label either, he released a few 12 inches and has appeared on all the labels compilations. Actually four of the songs here appeared on Battle Axe Warriors two years prior.
The production lineup is mostly in-house Battle Axe, Rob the Viking handles the bulk of the album but you also get a few beats from DJ Ralph M (Funkboobiest), Kemo (Rascalz) and J-Swift (from his previous Wascals/Pharcyde connections). You'd think with names like this that the album would have pretty good beats, but its length really hurts the consistency as the album is a little too long. Actually most of the best songs were the songs that were previously released, and none of the additions are essential or anything.
